A lovingly renovated quintessentially English country house in the heart of a traditional village close to Banbury.
Built in the mid 1600s, in the style of Thomas Archer, Thorpe Manor is a Grade II* listed Georgian manor. The original owners, Thomas & Mary Kirton, were related to Oliver Cromwell (Mary being his first cousin). The Kirton family owned the manor from 1554 to 1685, when it was passed to the Gostelowes who owned it until 1724. During this time, it is thought that several significant features were added, including the south façade, a provincial classic of Wrens’ age.
Mr Henry Teare inherited Thorpe Manor in 2013 from the previous owner, his step-father, Mr Derek Ancil. Derek was a successful horse jockey, trainer and owner, who bought the manor in 1968 and used the adjacent stable block as his private training yard. In 1960, Derek won the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on his horse Knucklecracker. This was a unique highlight of his career, as there has not been a winning jockey before or since who has been both the horse owner and trainer. Each bedroom suite has been names after his significant horses in a sentimental nod to Derek’s legacy.
This quintessential English country house has been lovingly and sympathetically renovated and restored. Maintaining its authenticity, Thorpe Manor has been brought into the 21st century to meet contemporary expectations of comfort and hospitality. 14 of the bedroom suites now have new bathrooms, ensuring all guests’ needs are catered to. (The only exception is the master bedroom which has a magnificent Edwardian bathtub.) Thorpe Manor is offered as a fully-staffed, self-catered private house. However, there is the option to rent Thorpe with an in-house food team, which utilises produce from the abundant countryside surroundings, and serves fresh dishes made from vibrant, local, home-grown ingredients, with a modern flair.

Easy to reach, Thorpe Manor is conveniently located 10 minutes outside of Banbury in Oxfordshire. Regular trains take 55 minutes from London Marylebone. By car, the house is within 30 minutes’s drive from the heart of the Cotswolds, 45 minutes from Birmingham, 1 hour from Heathrow, and 1.5 hours from London.

Plan your perfect wedding celebrations at Thorpe Manor, a Georgian manor house surrounded by the natural beauty of its 200 acre estate, with 14 en suite bedrooms (including the Bridal Suite), cinema, gym, bar, hot-tub, drawing room, dining room, flower room, summerhouse, orchard and lawns for marquees. At Thorpe Manor we are licensed for wedding ceremonies in the Flower Room and the Summerhouse. Thorpe Manor is conveniently located directly opposite the charming village church, which seats up to 120 guests. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist and is believed to date back to the 13th Century.

There are several lawns for marquees or outside structures to be assembled. We have a 63amp 3 phase power supply installed.
Music and parties are permitted until midnight. Bands and DJ’s are welcome. We also have a baby grand piano in the main entrance hallway available for drinks receptions and dinners.
