Benham Park Berkshire

Nestled within sweeping parkland, Benham Park traces its origins to the historic Benham Valence Manor — a royal gift bestowed by Queen Elizabeth I upon her Italian tutor, Giovanni Battista Castiglione, in 1570. Over the centuries, the estate passed through distinguished hands before William Craven, 6th Baron Craven, commissioned the magnificent Georgian mansion that graces the landscape today.

Completed in 1775, the house was shaped by two masters of their craft: architect Henry Holland designed its elegant proportions, while the legendary Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown sculpted the surrounding grounds into the quintessential English parkland that still enchants visitors. This became the cherished retreat of Lady Elizabeth Craven and, later, her second husband Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach — a former German prince who chose the tranquil beauty of the English countryside over the demands of a throne.

Step inside and you’ll discover the neoclassical refinement that defined Georgian taste at its finest: an original sweeping staircase, the exquisite Circular Hall, and interiors that speak to centuries of cultivated living. While the estate has evolved through the ages, its essential character — that rare combination of grandeur and warmth — remains beautifully preserved.

Following an extensive restoration, Benham Park has been lovingly returned to its former glory. Today, this extraordinary estate once again opens its doors, offering discerning guests the chance to experience true English country house living — a private sanctuary where history, elegance, and the timeless allure of the Berkshire countryside come together.
