Cowdray House West Sussex

Private Stays at Cowdray
Time is one of life’s greatest luxuries and at Cowdray you are invited to spend it well. Whether you’re gathering with family, celebrating with friends, or simply seeking rest and renewal, the House is exclusively yours to enjoy, entirely at your pace. Every stay is thoughtfully tailored, with our team on hand to take care of every detail, so you can focus on what matters most. From private chefs and butlers to nannies and concierges, everything can be arranged to create a truly effortless experience. Arrive in style via the estate’s private helipad and settle in as though it were your own country home. Cowdray House also offers the perfect base for some of England’s most iconic events, including the British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup, and Goodwood’s Festival of Speed, Revival, and Glorious Goodwood. Return from the excitement to peace, privacy, and a house that welcomes you back with open arms.

A Spectacular Setting
Private, peaceful, and utterly enchanting—Cowdray House welcomes you the moment you turn onto the tree-lined drive, where sweet chestnuts arch overhead and the landscape unfolds with quiet majesty. Designed in the 18th century by the great Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the grounds offer a breathtaking backdrop of rolling English countryside. Wander past the manicured croquet lawn and discover the serene Ladies Lake, complete with a charming bridge and a jetty made for quiet moments. Follow winding woodland paths past Pear Pond – shaped just as its name suggests – and along Wellingtonia Avenue, where towering cedars planted in 1742 stand in timeless grace. With each turn, the landscape offers something new: golden in autumn, fresh and fragrant in spring, magical under winter frost. The beauty of Cowdray is constant, yet always changing.

Exceptional Spaces to Gather and Celebrate
Step through the great oak doors into a house that feels both grand and welcoming. At its heart is Buck Hall – an awe-inspiring space with vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and a minstrel’s gallery – ideal for magnificent celebrations or intimate gatherings alike. The richly panelled Dining Room invites long, laughter-filled dinners, while the elegant Library and Drawing Room open onto a sun-soaked terrace with sweeping views of the South Downs. On warm days, this is the perfect spot for an aperitif at golden hour. For quieter moments, the Morning Room offers comfort and calm—a cosy retreat with deep sofas, soft light, and a crackling fire.

Seasonal Delights from the Estate
Dining at Cowdray is a celebration of the land, golden honey from our own hives, estate-reared venison and freshly baked scones served fireside. From relaxed breakfasts to sumptuous feasts, every meal is thoughtfully prepared by the talented in-house chefs.

Perfect for Gatherings, Grand or Intimate
Whether you’re hosting an elegant dinner for 20 or a lively celebration for 150, Cowdray House offers the ultimate in privacy and style. After dining, unwind in the Morning Room, play billiards, or dance the night away before retiring to the comfort of your room. For larger groups, five charming cottages and four magical treehouses provide space for up to 66 guests in total, including children—ideal for family holidays or milestone occasions.

A Sporting Estate Like No Other
From polo and fly fishing to shooting and golf, Cowdray is steeped in British sporting tradition. Take a swing on our championship course, explore the countryside on horseback, or polish your polo technique with expert instructors at the Academy.

The Great Outdoors, Reimagined
The spirit of Cowdray is rooted in nature. Meander through manicured gardens once visited by Tudor royalty, play croquet on the lawn, enjoy a guided foraging walk, or set off on a cycle through the stunning South Downs.

A Home for All Seasons

In winter, Cowdray embraces the season and glows with warmth, fires flicker in every hearth, the scent of pine fills the halls, and the house is dressed in festive finery. Whether you prefer attentive butler service or a more laid-back stay, our team will help craft your perfect retreat, entirely your own.
