Every stay at Keythorpe Hall is uniquely crafted, available as your private hideaway and solely for your exclusive use.
The house was built for entertaining by Hon. Henry William Wilson, 11th Lord Berners, a founding member and former president of the Royal Agricultural Society. Building commenced in the Georgian style in the late 1700s and was completed in 1843. It is positioned overlooking a deep valley with views over the old estate and beyond.
A PERSONAL WELCOME
Guests are welcomed into the grand entrance hall, featuring twin fireplaces, contemporary artworks, original Berners family portraits, and an early Blüthner grand piano. This elegant space can be used for dinners, meeting rooms or a spontaneous dance floor.
Guest can enjoy the wonderfully proportioned formal rooms with lofty 18ft high ceilings, all with floor to ceiling windows to maximise light and the sweeping views over undulating hills. The walls are decorated with a combination of portraits and modern art and the interiors are the result of a five-year restoration project by Giles and Barbara, the current owners. Each room offers a sense of grandeur while remaining comfortable and homely.
The double drawing rooms, with two stunning marble fireplaces, offer breath taking views of the unspoilt countryside. Here, guests can relax in comfort, play games, enjoy pre-dinner cocktails, or simply sit with a good book.
The fully appointed family kitchen is for the sole use of guests and is perfect for enjoying a morning coffee while watching the sunrise.
GARDENS & GROUNDS
Keythorpe Hall has over 20 acres of grounds, with 10 acres of formal gardens, and woodland, all with paths and walks close to the house.
There is a tennis court, croquet lawn and outdoor heated swimming pool with spectacular views. In addition, there are lovely countryside walks – the Midshire Way runs through the village.
Activities such as horse riding (there are stables, paddocks and a manège on-site if you’d like to bring your own horses), cycling, sailing and water-sports on Rutland Water and country sports can be arranged.
SLEEPING
Keythorpe Hall offers seven luxurious principal bedrooms in the main house, with the option of adding a three-bedroom apartment. Each bedroom has its own distinct character and style; every light-filled room is graced with high ceilings, decorated with ornate cornicing, and features floor-to-ceiling windows offering breathtaking views of the English countryside.
FOOD & DRINK
At Keythorpe Hall we present an exciting and delicious food journey that is both modern and sustainable, but above all, fully bespoke. All dishes are hyper-seasonal and showcase the produce from the walled garden and the best from our local farms. We also use forgotten methods of preserving ingredients to use in the leaner months of the year.
In the kitchen we have culinary star Bent Varming. Bent trained at the internationally renowned Copenhagen Hospitality College before spending most of his career in London, beginning at Sketch (3*) before working at St.John(1*), the forerunner of nose to tail eating, and then moving to highly acclaimed Lyle’s (1*) where he was senior sous chef. He then went to develop and perfect his baking at the award winning Dusty Knuckle Bakery – one of the best in London.
Bent grew up in the Danish countryside, later moving to Copenhagen to study. His father is Danish and mother is from the Faroe Islands where he was born. There is a Nordic approach to his cooking which celebrates purity, simplicity and freshness. Ingredients are left to shine which is really evident in his food philosophy.
Your carefully curated menu starts the moment you set foot into the door. There will be elegant family meals and refined feasts, featuring fruit and vegetables picked from our walled garden, wild herbs and plants sustainably foraged from our woodlands, and meat, dairy and fish sourced from surrounding farms and artisan producers. We celebrate ingredients in their prime.
Drink
With good food goes good wine. We have teamed up with award winning sommelier and author of ‘Which Wine When’ Bert Blaize.
Bert honed his skills at La Belle Epoque in Manchester and Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons, before taking the reins at the Clove Club in Shoreditch, East London, and more recently opening an award winning fine food & wine shop in North London.
Bert will be your wine concierge – available to create a personalised wine and drinks experiences to match the menus and the occasion at Keythorpe Hall.
Keythorpe is a very private and exclusive retreat available upon request.
We have your enquiry and we will be in touch between 9am - 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

LOCATION
Keythorpe Hall has an enviable position in the centre of the country, and is ideal as a base to explore many of the historical towns and houses around the UK. We are just over an hour’s travel by train from London, under two hours to York and just over an hour by car to Cambridge and Stratford upon Avon. Locally you can visit historic market towns of Uppingham, Oakham and Stamford or the forgotten burial place of King Richard III in nearby Leicester.
We are on the border of Leicestershire and Rutland and in the heart of an area of natural beauty called High Leicestershire, typified by rolling hills and broad ridges and chocolate-box stone villages. Think of the Cotswolds but without the hoards of tourists. The local towns have art galleries and antique shops and there are fantastic local village pubs. This is an area of productive farmland networked with ancient trackways and quiet roads. There are historic stately homes and Iron-age settlements, and Norman conquest castles – some mere archaeological sites and others still thriving homes.
Rutland Water – Europe’s biggest man-made lake is on our doorstep and is not only a place for sailing, paddleboarding or wild swimming but is an internationally recognised Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI), Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. It is one of the best places to enjoy birds and wildlife in the UK. Search for rare spring migrants, admire fishing ospreys in the summer, enjoy the autumn wader passage and marvel at huge flocks of winter wildfowl. With events year round, walking trails and two visitor centres, you’ll be sure of an immersive wildlife experience for the whole family.
There is a wealth of local historic houses & gardens to explore from the grand Elizabethan Burghley House to the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton at Woolsthorpe Manor and beautiful stone market towns to explore. We can arrange guides, transport and of course a fabulous picnic!
Browse the antique shops and boutiques of Uppingham and Stamford with an expert guide.
Cycle along green lanes and visit Saxon churches and 17th century historic Inns.
Explore Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon, just over an hour’s drive away. We can arrange a private guide to bring Shakespeare alive in the historic town where he was born.
Visit Cambridge or Oxford and see the world renowned colleges and beautiful architecture. Combine a trip to Cambridge with the stunning medieval cathedrals at Ely and Peterborough, or a shopping trip at Bicester Village if you are visiting Oxford!
